KAMRA Inlay

Many of our patients reaching middle age start to notice that their near vision is starting to get a little blurrier. This is an extremely common occurrence, affecting a substantial amount of people over the age of 40. If you have noticed that you have to hold your phone or book farther away to focus on it, presbyopia may be the culprit.

Presbyopia is an age related refractive error. Presbyopia is different from myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, as those are a result of genetic and environmental factors and can be corrected with LASIK surgery.

Normally, the natural lens in the eye (which is responsible for focusing light) is elastic, and can adjust to accommodate all distances. As we age, this lens begins to thicken and become less elastic, therefore it’s ability to accommodate near vision is hindered.

Presbyopia can be frustrating. Reading glasses can help, but most people, especially those who have never had any other visual problems, find them to be a hassle. Luckily, the KAMRA Corneal Inlay is a treatment option growing in popularity, and offers a solution to presbyopia.

What is the KAMRA Inlay?

The KAMRA Inlay is a very thin, tiny ring shaped device that is implanted into the cornea. The KAMRA Inlay is designed to help restore near vision and reduce the constant frustrations of reading glasses.

The KAMRA Inlay procedure is fairly simple and quick. The inlay is only implanted into one eye. Using a laser, the surgeon will create a “pocket” in the first few layers of the cornea. The inlay will be inserted through the pocket and centered above the pupil. The incision made in the cornea is self healing, requiring no stitches. Following surgery, both eyes will work together to allow clear vision at both near and far distances.

The KAMRA Inlay is an amazing advance in presbyopia correction, but it is not for everyone. Risk factors such as previous eye disease or injury might make the procedure more risky than it is worth for you. OCLI is among the first in Long Island to perform this new and advanced procedure and have undergone special training to become certified.

The best way to learn more about how the KAMRA Inlay can benefit you is to schedule a consultation. Our expert team will determine if this technology is right for you!
